Walking through the floor plan you'll discover a huge master bedroom with lots of wallspace and great southern exposure for natural light thru a nice size window. The closet space is a walk-in closet with room for upper storage on the racks. you'll notice also that the master bathroom suite is large with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower. There is really no waisted space in this room, or through-out the house.

The builder says it costs about as much to build an intricate porch like this as if it were finished square footage on the inside. The only difference is that the cost of this porch doesn't show up in the square footage of the home on the sale price.

Back into the home you'll notice that the home has a large separate family room towards the back of the home with a slight vault in the ceiling. There is also a nice side porch off the family room as well that leads to the back yard. At the other end of the family room are french doors that lead to an office, den or craft room for the hobbyist. If your looking for a home office space, this might be worth looking at.

Then there's the kitchen and dining areas of the home. The dining area has hardwood floors as well as the entire kitchen floor. The dining room has a gorgeous chandlier as it's centerpiece for the room. The kitchen has vaulted ceilings, large deep pantry with pullout shelves and lots of cabinet space. The sink is also stainless steele. The cabinets have theatre lights underneath them with rope lights on top for nite time accent. The cherry cabinets with the antique knobs make a nice finish and combination.

Peoples Bank Opens New Ferndale WA Branch

On monday Peoples Bank opened its brand new branch in Ferndale, Washington located at 1895 E. Main St., next to Walgreens. The branch replaces the office that was inside the Ferndale Cost Cutter store, which closed Friday.

The move allowed the bank to add drive-up teller and ATM service. The bank will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The office branch manager is Angie Ritchey. Nathan Lovegren is the assistant branch manager. Peoples Bank is a $900 million, independent bank. It is headquartered in Lynden and operates 25 branches throughout Washington.

Fed Cuts Key Rate to 4.75%

This is great news for the housing industry and Whatcom County area home buyers. Anytime you can reduce the cost of borrowing money to the consumer that opens up more opportunities for buyers to get back into the real estate market.

The central bank cut its key federal funds rate from 5.25% to 4.75%. It also cut the discount rate from 5.75% to 5.25%. The two cuts were larger than most Fed watchers had expected; they'd seen the federal funds rate moving only to 5%.

The federal funds rate, which is what banks charge each other for overnight loans and is the basis for everything from business loans to credit card charges, has been at 5.25% for more than a year. But the Fed has not cut the rate since June 2003.

While the fed funds rate is what banks charge each other for overnight loans, the discount rate is what the Fed charges member institutions directly for short-term loans. The Fed cut the discount rate from 6.25% to 5.75% on Aug. 17 in a bid to soothe jittery global credit markets.

The reason for the dramatic cuts was to help the economy weather the effects of this summer's credit crunch. The Fed said it didn't want the housing slump to spread throughout the economy.

This should help the local housing market here in Whatcom County because there seems to be so many buyers sitting on the fence that want to buy a home and now this interest rate drop today should motivate a lot of buyers to purchase now.

I've been saying for a long time now, that the interest rates even before today were really not that bad, it's all this negative chatter that’s been in the market now for the past two years. It just takes time to move the negative talk out of the markets and maybe today’s news is exactly what we needed to get our local Whatcom County housing market back on track.

Ferndale marked its centennial in 2007 and there’s plenty going on as the city starts its second 100 years.

The city is growing steadily, topping 10,500 people in its centennial year, a 20 percent increase over the past seven years. A river plaza trail in the works will connect Vander Yacht Park and Main Street to Pioneer Park and the ConocoPhillips Sports Complex. Commercial and light-industrial growth has been vibrant, notably between Interstate 5 and the Nooksack River.

Civic strengths include the city’s public school system, the annual Old Settlers Picnic, and the nearby twin gems of Hovander Homestead Park and Tennant Lake Interpretive Center. One of my favorite events is the annual Highland games that was moved this year from Hovander Park to nearby Pioneer Park.

HISTORY

Pioneer Park began with the purchase of four acres in 1901, but it wasn’t until 1935, when the Foster house built in 1895 near Squalicum Lake was moved to the park, that the idea of relocating and preserving pioneer buildings at the park took hold.

Ferndale Building New School in 2007

Ferndale voters approved a $32.2 million bond to pay for new property, construction of a new school and improvements at several Ferndale district buildings.

In the fall, Ferndale purchased 29 acres of land off Church Road for a new school. The district is not sure yet whether the school will be a comprehensive high school or whether it will house an alternative high school program.

A bond proposal to build the school likely won’t go to voters until spring 2008 or 2009.

Construction on the school’s new elementary school, also on Church Road, is expected to begin this summer and finish in July or August 2008.

The biggest renovation project scheduled is Custer Elementary, with electrical, mechanical and plumbing upgrades and structural work needed. Seattle-based Rolluda Architects have completed their proposals for the project and the district is seeking staff and community feedback on the renovation options.

During the renovation, scheduled to begin in summer 2008, Custer students will move temporarily to the new elementary school.

Revisions to Skyline Elementary parking lot are complete. Upgrades are not yet done at Beach, Mountain View and North Bellingham elementary schools, Vista Middle School and the district’s transportation building. Work on Ferndale High is under way. Via Bellingham Herald
